Naphthol AS-CL phosphate is a phosphate ester that is hydrolyzed by phosphatases to produce p-nitrophenol and orthophosphate. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of acid phosphatase in human liver and dermis. Naphthol AS-CL phosphate inhibits the activity of acid phosphatase, which is required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins. This inhibition can lead to a decrease in cell proliferation and an increase in cell death. The inhibition of acid phosphatase also leads to the accumulation of pyrophosphate, which may inhibit other enzymes such as protein kinase C or ribonucleotide reductase. Naphthol AS-CL phosphate has also been shown to inhibit leucocyte migration into mastitis skin lesions.
