Resorufin β-D-galactopyranoside is a compound used for screening and testing purposes in humans. It is commonly used to detect the presence of beta-galactosidase, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in various biological processes. Resorufin β-D-galactopyranoside has inhibitory effects on estrogen receptors and can be used to screen for inhibitors of these receptors. Resorufin β-D-Galactopyranoside is a fluorogenic substrate for β-galactosidase. Upon enzymatic cleavage by β-galactosidase, the fluorescent moiety resorufin is released and its fluorescence can be used to quantify β-galactosidase activity. Resorufin displays excitation/emission maxima of 570/580 nm, respectively.
