2-Nitrophenyl b-D-fucopyranoside (2NPBF) is a reactive compound that can be used to control the expression of messenger RNA in cells. It binds to the ribosome and blocks translation, resulting in an inhibition of protein synthesis. 2NPBF has been used as a hybridization control agent for DNA, RNA, and protein samples. This compound is also a useful fluorinated analogue for quantifying hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds in proteins. 2NPBF has been shown to have a significant effect on the radiation sensitivity of some microorganisms through its ability to interfere with DNA replication. The sequence of this molecule is well known, making it an ideal model system for testing synthetic methods for photopolymer synthesis.
